New Year: Seeds of Hope

January 2, 2018 By Sarah Hewitt

New Year, A time to realign with our intentions and Inspirations. Reflect on what teachers and lessons came to us in 2017, give Gratitude for the struggles and miracles. Then with a more loving and awakened perception, we plant seeds for this next cycle around our Sun. They certainly have been whizzing by, so I am cherishing this time of sub zero temperature to truly slow down and set intentions. Our focus is one of the most powerful tools we have, but it will not work when compromised or diluted.  I started off 2018 by watching the film Seed: The Untold Story. I was moved to tears by the reality that Large seed corporations are literally buying up seed varieties. Monsanto now OWNS 60% of the worlds commercial seeds. On top of this travesty, we have streamlined and commercialized our food to a degree that has eliminated 94% of our vegetable seed varieties.  Diversity and variety is the most important component to a healthy system. Everything in the natural world that we study, including ourselves, thrives with more diversity. If we loose this in our food system, we loose much of it in our bodily system and consequently, get disease. This is already happening folks. Diversity and variety begets more life, while singular species cut off from other life, get disease and die.

So as not to start the year with Fear and morbidity, I will add that I have been extremely inspired by this film. It has become clear that seeds could be the Most important security system humans have. I am inspired to grow and save my own seeds, no matter how small your bank, starting somewhere is always better than feeling like a hypocrite….or feeling regret when more vegetable species become extinct.  Even just supporting a local seed bank in whatever way you can is a great place to begin this process of food diversity and resiliency. Within these gorgeous and seductive seeds is stored much information, nutrition, and wisdom passed along with our evolution. They have  carried us this far, to great heights, lets make sure to care about their future right along side ours. I am setting an intention for 2018 on recognizing, saving, and storing seeds. This goes hand in hand with the intention of living in harmony with the land and all species. I hope you have seen this film, or will, and feel inspired to join me with the intention of securing the genetic diversity of our food. May we recognize all life as equal to our own and celebrate it!!
