A little more exploration into home-made berry inks!! Near where I live, in Plainfield Vermont, I recently discovered a large plot of Organically grown Aronia berries. These berries look like extra sized Blueberries that grow in large clusters. It was my first time picking these berries, as well as experiencing their super astringent taste. The berries are known as a Superfood due to their dense polyphenol content. At the end of an hours pick, my entire hands were stained and amazingly deep purple color. I immediately had the thought, ooh, this might make a great dye/paint! So I decided to pick a little extra for this purpose. Back at home, those berries that did not get cooked, smashed and blended into a rich, healthy syrup, got smooshed and strained into ink. This is my first painting done with mostly Aronia Ink and a little Chinese white paint on top! I love the way it moves and naturally marbles on the paper, it shows so much more depth than store bought paints. So much more exploring to do, a little bit more discovery every day, and more time to do so with fresh snow on the ground!
