I have been painting on canvas since a local Vermont artist took me under her wing as an apprentice. She filled me with an undeniable fascination for color, texture and organic manifestation. This was about 10 years ago, when I became obsessed with pigment. I voraciously painted anything I could look at for a while. This left me with a pretty strong and diverse portfolio, and got me into RISD. I tried to fight the painter in me through foundation year, by studying something more practical like design or printmaking…..but always I have returned to paint, passionately. Painting has been the consistent thread throughout my life’s adventures for about 11 years. Even in my expansive explorations of other materials and motions, they start in a painting and eventually will return to rest in it. I have become quite invested in making my own pigment and paints from clay, stone, plants, and spices……still experimenting and looking for new colors to create with. Saffrons, vermillion, crimsons, and ochers, I love so many of the deep earthy pigments waiting to be dug up.
